A talk about strong women past and present, from the East End during the second world war to the cut throat world of Fleet Street.
Welcome back to another episode of Human First! We’re excited and honoured to
introduce none other than Kate Thompson. Kate is an award-winning journalist, ghost writer
and novelist who has spent the past two decades in the UK mass market and book
publishing industry. In her books, Kate tells powerfully authentic stories of London's
working-class women in wartime. She was named True Life Writer of the Year for a
reason. Her debut novel from 2015 Secrets of the singer girls became a Sunday Times
Bestseller reaching over 10,000 sales In the first week.
When we think about war history books most of us imagine battlefields, the brotherhood of
the soldiers and great acts of heroism. In her books Kate celebrates the stories of civilians,
and in particular the women of the East End. Kate doesn’t romanticize the East End, but
explores its cosy, tight-knit communities of post-war Britain.
“All the women down my street worked, and worked in some really pioneering fields. There was a single mom on my road who was an architect, there was another lady, Penny Vincenzi, who was a multi million bestselling author"
Unlike the rest of her family, Kate wasn’t a natural academic and felt at a disadvantage.
However, she’d always loved writing and making up creative stories so she hit upon the idea
of being a journalist, because she could tell stories in a way that she could get paid for
Join us as we meet Kate Thompson, and delve into her journey.
